Fiat 124 Abarth Rally Car Testing
This video of the rally-prepped version of Fiat's latest roadster makes us wonder why Fiat doesn't just sell every 124 this way.
The production-spec Fiat 124 Spider is a very good car. Sure, it isn't as great as the Mazda Miata it's based on, but in isolation, it can make any enthusiast smile. Back in March, Fiat introduced a factory rally program for the 124 Spider, and called it the Abarth R-GT. Now, seven months later, we get to see it actually rip up some stages. And it's amazing.
The 124 Abarth R-GT looks pretty similar to the production car, but features a host of sweet upgrades to make it race-ready. For one, it's not a Spider anymore, because the black roof you see is fixed onto the car. It's got a heavy-duty roll cage to meet FIA guidelines, and even an air scoop to get fresh air into the cabin. Its turbocharged 1.8-liter four cylinder engine makes a crazy 300 horsepower, all of which goes to the rear wheels.
Gone is the six-speed manual transmission, and in its place is a race-ready seven-speed sequential gearbox. And from the sounds of it, there seems to be an anti-lag system in place to help keep that turbo spooled at all times.
This video is reportedly of the car's first testing run, as it rips up some European backroads that it could see during the World Rally Championship. Though it's not an official race, the driver has no trouble barreling into turns completely sideways at a spectacular pace.
Seeing the 124 Abarth R-GT hit the stages for real is going to be something else.
